The U. S. is the world’s largest drug maker and has a massive pipeline for the next five years. And with its massive investments in the U. drug industry, it is the only one to have taken the drug market’s highest grossing product, Viagra, into the spotlight.
Now, two of the world’s largest drug makers have announced that they will launch a generic version of Viagra in the U. for free, while the generic version of Cialis will be available through the U. pharmaceutical giant.
Viagra’s approval is a major victory for pharmaceutical companies, who have taken the Viagra industry’s most lucrative drugs to a new level. For those drugs, Viagra has generated a record $2.6 billion in annual sales for pharmaceutical companies, including U. drugmakers CVS and Walgreens.
CVS has spent $3.1 billion in the U. over the past five years, according to the, a comparison of the U. sales for the first-ever Viagra prescription.
The new drug is the first to be launched in the United States to provide free Viagra to men over 18, and the first to offer the same drug for free at an over-the-counter (OTC) pharmacy. The drugmaker’s share of the total U. market for Viagra has dropped to 19.5 percent from 20.6 percent in the first quarter of last year.
“This is an important milestone for U. drug makers,” said Dr. Tom J. Kothari, president of the U. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The CVS drugmaker announced Tuesday that it had granted approval to sell Cialis, the generic version of Viagra, for $2.05 per pill, the company said.
The new drug, which will be launched in the U. in late October, will be available only in a U. pharmacy. Cialis, the only new drug for Viagra to offer OTC at a time when it was being launched in the U. S., is not covered by insurance and is only available to the 18- to 24-year-old age group.
In its announcement, CVS said that it will offer an OTC version of Viagra for free and Cialis for $2.05 per pill. The generic version, which was already available in the U. S., will cost $2.15 per pill.
“Today’s announcement marks a significant achievement for Pfizer,” said David A. Katz, chairman and chief executive of Pfizer, in a company release.
The company’s second-quarter profit declined 18 percent to $16.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. It’s also down 12 percent to $2.4 billion. CVS has recorded a net loss of $1.8 billion, or 43 cents per share, as it tries to recover the $2.2 billion it was losing.
The CVS acquisition, announced Tuesday, was the second one to be approved by the FDA, as it will allow the company to continue its portfolio of drugs in the U. and beyond.
The company will continue to sell its drugs, including Viagra, as it tries to recover the $2.2 billion it lost in the first quarter of 2011.
In October, the company will be able to continue selling its drugs, including the one that is in development for the market, the company said.
The company is also trying to recover its market share, which has fallen to 9 percent from its pre-tax profit of $2.4 billion. Pfizer is expected to lose nearly half of its total sales and about 10 percent of its revenue over the next two years.
drugmaker’s shares rose 11 percent to $24.16 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Credit: ReutersThe news of Viagra’s approval will continue to fuel the pharmaceutical industry’s growing consumer demand for Viagra. But Pfizer Inc., maker of Viagra, announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with the U. Food and Drug Administration to provide the generic version of Viagra to its U. patients.“This is a big victory for patients and the company,” said Jim Cramer, president of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.
Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
